History and activities

The Consortium for the Protection of San Marzano PDO Tomato represents and protects one of the most famous Italian products in the world: the San Marzano PDO tomato. Its history is closely linked to the origin and tradition of this tomato, typical of the Campania region, particularly the Sarnese-Nocerino area where fertile soil and the Mediterranean climate favor its growth.

Recognized for its very high quality and versatility in the kitchen, the San Marzano PDO tomato has become increasingly popular over time. For this reason, in 1999 the Consortium for the Protection of San Marzano PDO Tomato (Protected Designation of Origin) was established by local producers, who are committed every day to promoting and protecting the San Marzano PDO tomato, defending its authenticity and reputation in both the national and international market.

PDO Certification.

Guarantee of quality.

The Consortium intends to pursue economic development and enhance the reference area, involving all economic, institutional, and social actors present in the cultivation and processing area of this product.

Objectives include:

  • Carry out all activities and tasks assigned to protection consortia by EU, national, and regional legislation
    – Keep registers of producers and processors entitled to use the PDO mark
  •  Promote and implement supply concentration policies
  •  Develop and spread improved cultivation techniques
  • Improve the profitability of agricultural producers
  •  Promote genetic improvement and safeguard the germplasm of local tomato ecotypes, as well as their selection
  •  Improve processing techniques for the agro-industrial sector

In particular, to protect consumers, the Consortium pays special attention to all control procedures from seeds, seedlings, cultivation, and processing systems to laboratory analyses, ensuring that only numbered and certified packages of San Marzano Tomato are placed on the market, certified by Agroqualità, the certification body designated by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies.

Thanks to the work of the Consortium, consumers can be sure to purchase a genuine, high-quality product.
